Woke up to “Little House on the Prairie” on fire

And realized I woke up to a reality I hadn’t thought about.

The school for the blind in Walnut Grove was burning down.

Let’s forget that Albert was involved in starting it with the ditched pipe, and that Mary’s baby died. Or that Alice died.

A blind person can not put out a fire without “blind” luck, and they couldn’t in this case.

My perspective is from reading for Saul for the last 12 years. Saul is fairly able for a retired blind person, but I had never thought “What if there was a fire”, or anything like that before (I also have not seen this episode of LHOTP since I was a child).  I usually read very boring things for him, like condo board financial statements, but sometimes thought provoking (but usually liberal articles from The New Yorker magazine).

Saul is married and has had a remarkable life, but to pretend he is equally able to deal with all events that could be experienced and grant him privileges based on the idea is insane.

We need to recognize that all people are not equal in ability. Until we do, we will continue our plummet into mediocrity as a nation.
